Simple window tiler

tile is a simple tile manager for Openbox. It is currently used in Openbox (see keyboard shortcuts) but may work with other window managers.

You can download my Openbox customization if you want a complete usage example.

Prerequisites

tile requires:

tile is a command line script but it's really usefull when used with keyboard shortcuts.

Syntax:

tile horizontal|vertical [n]: set the tiling schema with n areas (default is 2)
tile retile: retile windows using the current schema
tile left|right|up|down: send the current window to the left/right/up/down set the tiling schema to horizontal or vertical if the current desktop has no tiling yet.
tile resize [left|right|up|down] [+/-]delta: resize the current area in the given direction (if any)
tile activate left|right|up|down: activate the left/right/up/down window
tile untile: untile the current window

In my Openbox configuration I use the following keyboard shortcuts:

W-C-Left/Right/Up/Down: tile left/right/up/down

Move the active window to the left/right/up/down
W-v, W-h: tile vertical, tile horizontal

Change the tiling method (2 columns or 2 lines)
W-A-v, W-A-h: tile vertical 3, tile horizontal 3

Change the tiling method (3 columns or 3 lines)
W-S-Left/Right/Up/Down: tile resize left/right/up/down 0.1

Resize the current area (Left/Right for vertical tiling, Up/Down for horizontal tiling)
W-S-"+", W-S-"-": tile resize +0.1/-0.1

Resize the current area
W-Left/Right/Up/Down: tile activate left/right/up/down

Activate the window left/right/up/down to the active window
W-f: tile float

Do not tile the active window (make it "floatting")

Of course you can use the shortcuts you like (and share them ;-)

A nice way to tile windows is to use easystroke. You can record your own mouse gestures and associate them to a tile command.
